The Convent is the oldest religious building in Oliva. At the end of the 16th century, an earthquake destroyed the Rebollet castle and the convent of Santa María del Pi (‘St Mary of the Pine’). The Franciscan monks of the convent began to build a new church at the beginning of the 17th century to which the image of the Mare de Déu (‘mother of God’) of the Rebollet was relocated at the Countess’ wishes, following much litigation between the inhabitants of Oliva and those of La Font d’En Carròs.
This statue is found in the chapel of the castle and dates back to between the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century. The Virgen del Rebollet is the oldest image of the Virgin Mary in the Comunidad Valenciana and has features typical of Romanesque sculptures. A very tender image, it shows the Virgin Mary breastfeeding baby Jesus.
The church itself is a construction typical of the end of the Renaissance – a low-budget affair with a rectangular base and chapels around the edges. The altar is square-shaped and the ‘domed’ ceiling has four points. Inside, in addition to the statue of the Virgen del Rebollet, you will find numerous altarpieces, a skirting board made from Manises tiles on one of the altars, and the organ – all of which date back to the 18th century.
